How Long Can Goldfish Go Without Food? Up to Two Weeks

A healthy adult goldfish can go a week without food with no harm, and usually survives about two weeks.

No effect at all
4–7 days
Fine. It will be hungry
8–14 days
Usually survives, but loses condition

For a trip of up to a week, do a water change before you go and leave nothing in the tank. For longer, use a tested automatic feeder or a sitter with pre-measured portions. Skip dissolving holiday feeder blocks: they foul the water. Pond goldfish in cold water can go all winter without food.

A healthy adult goldfish can go a week without food with no harm, and usually survives about two weeks. Goldfish carry reserves, and a cool room slows their metabolism further. But after a week they start to lose condition, so arrange feeding for anything longer.

For a trip of up to a week, the water matters more than the food. Do a water change before you leave, feed normally the day before, and leave nothing in the tank.

How long is safe

The table above gives the short version for a healthy adult goldfish in a filtered tank.

  • Up to three days: no effect at all.
  • Four to seven days: fine. Goldfish produce a lot of waste, so a clean start matters more than food.
  • One to two weeks: usually survives, but arrange a feeder or a sitter.
  • Over two weeks: someone needs to feed the fish and check the tank.

Young goldfish under about three inches, and sick or old goldfish, have less in reserve. Do not leave them without food for more than two or three days.

Before you go

  • Do a 25–30% water change one or two days before you leave, and siphon the gravel. Goldfish waste builds up fast.
  • Rinse the filter sponge in a bucket of old tank water if it is clogged, so it keeps flowing while you are away. Never in tap water.
  • Feed the normal amount the day before. Extra food only rots.
  • Put the light on a timer, or leave it off. A week with the light on all day grows algae.
  • In summer, check the room will not overheat. Goldfish need cool water, and warm water holds less oxygen.

Longer trips

Automatic feeders work well once tested. Set the portion small, about what your goldfish eat in a minute, and run it for a week while you are still home. A feeder that jams leaves the fish hungry. One that dumps its hopper fouls the tank.

A sitter works too, if you control the portions. People who do not keep fish overfeed. Put each day's food in a pill organiser, one compartment per day, and ask them to give only that.

Skip the dissolving holiday blocks. Most of each block is binder that dissolves into the water. In a goldfish tank, which already carries a heavy waste load, that can push ammonia up while you are away.

Pond goldfish in winter

Pond goldfish are a different case. When the water drops below about 50°F, their metabolism slows so much that they stop eating, and they can go all winter without food. Do not feed them in that cold: they cannot digest it, and the food rots in the pond. Start feeding again with small meals once the water warms up in spring. See how often to feed goldfish for the temperature guide.

The same question for bettas, which are tropical and smaller, is in how long a betta can go without food.

The one thing worth taking from this

A healthy goldfish handles a week without food easily. Clean the water before you leave, leave the tank empty of food, and arrange feeding only for longer trips.
