Quick Verdict
Do not fill a fish tank with distilled water alone. It has no minerals for the fish and no carbonate to hold the pH steady. Use it to top off evaporation and to dilute hard tap water, and use dechlorinated tap water for everything else.
Not on its own. Distilled water has had everything taken out of it, including the minerals fish need and the carbonate that holds pH steady. A tank filled with it is unstable within days. It is the right water for two jobs: topping off evaporation, and diluting tap water that is too hard.
For everything else, dechlorinated tap water is better, and it costs almost nothing.
Why pure water is a problem
It sounds backwards. Distilled water is the cleanest water you can buy, so it should be the safest. The trouble is that fish do not live in clean water. They live in a dilute mineral solution, and distilling removes the solution.
Two things go missing, and test kits measure both.
General hardness (GH) is the calcium and magnesium in the water. Fish use these minerals to regulate the balance of salts in their bodies. Snails and shrimp build shell from them. Plants need them to grow. Distilled water has a GH of zero.
Carbonate hardness (KH) is the water's buffer, and it is the one that causes trouble quickly. A working aquarium produces acid all day, as a by-product of the nitrogen cycle. Carbonate absorbs that acid and keeps the pH where it was. Distilled water has a KH of zero as well, so nothing absorbs it, and the pH falls. In a small tank it can drop far enough in a few days to stress fish and stall the filter bacteria, which slow down sharply in acidic water.
Soft water is not empty water
Tetras, rasboras and bettas come from soft water, and guides often say so. Soft still means some minerals: a GH of 3 to 6 degrees, not zero. No aquarium fish comes from water with nothing in it.
What distilled water is good for
Topping off evaporation
This is the best use of it, and one that tap water does badly. When water evaporates from a tank, only the water leaves. The minerals stay behind. Refill with tap water and you add a fresh dose of minerals to the ones already there, so the tank gets a little harder with every top-off.
Distilled water replaces exactly what left: water and nothing else. In an open-topped tank in a dry room, where a few litres a week can evaporate, the difference adds up over a season.
Topping off is not a water change. It replaces what evaporated and removes nothing, so nitrate keeps climbing until you take water out.
Softening hard tap water
If your tap water is very hard and you want to keep fish that prefer it soft, mix the two. Hardness dilutes in proportion: half distilled and half tap gives half the GH and half the KH.
- Test the GH and KH of your tap water first. Most liquid kits count in drops, one drop per degree.
- Choose a ratio and mix it in a bucket, never in the tank.
- Add conditioner for the tap portion, then test the mix. Keep KH at 3 dKH or above so the pH holds steady.
- Match the temperature to the tank before it goes in.
- Use the same ratio at every water change. Fish cope with a wide range of hardness. What they handle badly is hardness that keeps changing.
Most beginners never need to do this. The fish usually recommended for a first tank — livebearers, danios, corydoras, most tetras sold in shops — have been bred in tap water for generations and do well across a wide range of hardness. Steady water matters more than a perfect number.
Remineralised, for shrimp and specialists
Keepers of delicate shrimp and soft-water fish often start from distilled or RO water and add a measured mineral powder to reach an exact GH and KH. It works, and it is how they get identical water every week. It is also a recurring cost and one more thing to measure. It is a later step in the hobby.
What to use instead
Tap water with a conditioner. Conditioner neutralises chlorine within seconds, and most brands handle chloramine too — check that the label says so. A bottle lasts a small tank for months. It is one of the cheapest lines on a full setup shopping list.
The water that is best for your fish is the water you can supply, identically, every week.
Letting tap water stand overnight is no longer a reliable substitute. It drives off chlorine, but many water suppliers now disinfect with chloramine, which is made to persist and does not gas off. Your supplier's annual water quality report states which one it uses.
Bottled spring water does contain minerals, but the amount differs from brand to brand and is rarely printed on the label. If you use it, test it first, and stay with one brand.
Well water is usually hard and has no chlorine in it. Test it for nitrate and for metals before you trust it, since neither is regulated in a private well.
The one thing worth taking from this
Distilled water is an ingredient. On its own it has nothing for the fish and nothing to keep the pH steady. For topping off evaporation, or mixed with hard tap water, it does a job that nothing else does as well. Fill the tank from the tap, and keep a jug of distilled next to it for the water that evaporates.
